Grade 350WA vs S355JR: What Structural Steel Grades Actually Mean

Ask ten people on a construction site what “Grade 350” actually means and you will likely get ten different answers. Some will say it is a brand. Others will guess it is a thickness. In reality, it is one of the most important numbers on your project, because it tells you exactly how much load that steel can carry before it permanently deforms.

The number is the yield strength

Structural steel grades in Australia are named after their nominal yield strength in megapascals (MPa). Grade 350 steel is designed to a nominal yield strength of 350 MPa. In practice, under AS/NZS 3678 (the Australian/New Zealand standard for hot-rolled steel plate), the actual specified minimum yield strength for Grade 350 plate 12 mm and thicker is 340 MPa, with tensile strength in the range of 450 to 550 MPa. That gap between the “350” name and the 340 MPa specified minimum is normal. It reflects how the standard sets a guaranteed floor for thicker sections, where yield strength typically decreases slightly as thickness increases.

This matters because yield strength is the point at which steel stops behaving elastically (it springs back) and starts to permanently deform. Engineers design connections, spans and load paths around that number. Specify the wrong grade, or accept an unverified substitute, and you are not just risking a paperwork mismatch. You are risking the structural assumptions the entire design was built on.

Two standards, two product forms

Grade 350 steel is not covered by a single standard. AS/NZS 3678 governs hot-rolled plate, while AS/NZS 3679.1 covers hot-rolled structural steel sections such as universal beams (I-beams) and columns. Both use the same grade naming convention, but they are separate standards with their own tolerances, testing regimes and chemical composition limits. A mill certificate for plate steel and a mill certificate for a rolled I-beam section are not interchangeable documents, even if both say “Grade 350.”

Where S355JR fits in

S355JR is the equivalent European designation, defined under EN 10025. Like Grade 350, it targets a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa, and the two grades are broadly recognised as equivalent for structural design purposes across commercial and industrial construction. This matters in Australia because so much structural steel and componentry moves through international supply chains. Knowing that Grade 350WA and S355JR sit in the same performance bracket lets engineers and buyers move between local and international mill sources without second-guessing the fundamentals, provided the mill certification is there to prove it.

Welding is not an afterthought

Grade 350 steel carries a higher carbon equivalent value (CEV) than lower grades, which has real consequences on site. Thicker Grade 350 plate, generally over 20 mm in highly restrained connections, can require preheating to around 50°C before welding to avoid cracking, and standard practice is to apply that 50°C preheat to any Grade 350 plate over 25 mm regardless of ambient temperature. Skip this step on a cold morning and you can introduce hydrogen cracking that is invisible until the structure is under load. This is one of the reasons fabrication should sit with a team that understands the grade, not just the shape being cut.

Why the mill certificate is the real product

Here is the uncomfortable truth about structural steel supply: two lengths of steel can look identical and perform very differently. The only way to know what you are actually getting is the documentation trail. That means:

  • Mill certificates confirming mechanical and chemical properties for the actual heat/batch supplied
  • Confirmed ISO accreditation for the manufacturing facility
  • A product specification compliance declaration
  • Dimensional inspection records, available on request

When a supplier cannot produce this paperwork on demand, “equivalent grade” is a claim, not a fact. On a commercial build, a mining infrastructure project or an engineered shed in a cyclonic wind region, that is not a risk worth carrying.

The practical takeaway

Grade 350WA and S355JR are not marketing terms. They are performance guarantees backed by testable standards. Before steel goes into your structure, know which standard it was supplied under, confirm the mill certificate matches the batch on site, and make sure whoever is welding it understands the preheat requirements for the thickness involved. That is the difference between steel that meets a number on a spec sheet and steel you can actually trust.
